Cholesterol is a fat-like substance found in your blood. If
there’s too much cholesterol in your blood, it builds
up in the walls of your arteries. Over time, this buildup causes
“hardening of the arteries” so that arteries become
narrowed and blood flow to the heart or brain is slowed down
or blocked. How does this happen well, in my opinion some comes
from meat products but even more come from refined carbohydrates
which do break down to a fat-like substance in the walls of
the arteries and as belly fat.
It’s not unusual to have both high blood pressure and
high cholesterol at the same time. They pretty much go hand
in hand, but here’s the thing, cholesterol does not create
symptoms, high blood pressure does. So there are a lot of people
out there with super high cholesterol, a heart attack waiting
to happen. Here are some vital need to know.
Total cholesterol -the total amount
of different types of cholesterol in your blood, optimal less
than 200mg/dL
Low-density lipoprotein (LDL or "bad")
cholesterol - the main source of cholesterol buildup and blockage
in the arteries, (risk for heart disease) optimal less than
100mg/dL.
High-density lipoprotein (HDL or
"good") cholesterol - helps keep cholesterol from
building up in the arteries, (protects against heart disease)
optimal 60 mg/dL or more.
Triglycerides - another form of
fat in your blood, that can also raise heart disease risk, optimal
less than 100 mg/dL.
